What Is Coaching? How is Coaching Different from Counseling?

This is a really great question. Sprouting Roots Mental Health Counseling practice is inherently holistic. While we do work with health insurance that follows what is called the disease model of viewing people, we believe personally at looking at the entire human and the system around them. The mental health counseling system requires diagnoses and when taking insurance specifically, there are a lot of rules we have to follow and do so in order to be accessible to the wider public. Coaching though, allows us to practice with a more holistic view. Coaching is not counseling. It is not diagnosis based. When working under the coaching umbrella, we cannot provide diagnoses or write letters about individuals mental health. Basically, even though our therapists are trained under the mental health counseling umbrella, if they are working in the coaching realm, they are not using that disease model and diagnosis way of approaching the issue. If a more holistic model of healing speaks to you and something you are aligned with, then reach out to us today for a free consultation and we can go over things and see if this would be a good fit for your treatment. Because coaching is not a state dependent licensure, we are able to work with a wider net of individuals throughout and beyond the US. Coaching may not be recommended for all, depending upon a persons given situation and upon initial assessment. We encourage you to reach out to us at Sprouting Roots Mental Health Counseling regardless and explore what the right path for you is!

Why do some people prefer Coaching to Counseling?

There could be many reasons why someone would prefer coaching over counseling. As stated before, coaching can follow a more holistic view and positive view of the person. The disease model in the US of diagnosis is inherently a problem focused model of treatment. It does not take into account prevention, and often insurance will not cover treatments that may prevent further worsening of symptoms until those symptoms are worse. So some individuals prefer to be proactive, and may want to engage in coaching because they want to chose to be in treatment more often then is allowed by their insurance, or follow a path that does not have a diagnosis attached to their documentation. The reality is that counseling follows the diagnosis and DSM for labeling and treating individuals. Some people do not want a diagnosis for different reasons, and thus opt into coaching instead. Coaching is not covered by insurance, there is no diagnosing. Some individuals prefer not having labels attached to their record. Other individuals may truly not have a diagnosis, they may be seeking guidance and support, but do not really fit the counseling realm of support, and for those people coaching would be a better option as well.
